Best & Worst Shampoos

Today, I learned about the benefits of NOT SHAMPOOING EVER AGAIN.

This concept intrigued me almost as much as wanting to know what other people thought about using conditioner to silken up and shine their hair.

While I agree that Americans have been force-fed a line of BS about 'having' to wash daily, (thanks, again, to the media), I am curious about the draw-backs to not, EVER shampooing again.

I'm sure it's been mentioned before, but my skin, head to toe, has always been on the dry side. Even as a teenager, while 'everyone else' took that ritual, daily shower and washed their hair at the same time, I was secretly bathing that way once a week, and I only shampooed my hair on that day while I would rinse with a condition every, other day in order to keep my hair from turning to straw.

Strange at it may seem to most, I never gave off an offensive odor, nor did my hair. As a matter of fact, I often wondered how it was possible for some girls to take a shower in the morning, and then have grease covering the top of their head by lunch time. And in private, I ENVIED THEM! Even then, I knew the secret to healthy, youthful skin was NATURAL OIL. I wanted natural oil, I wanted oily skin, and I think I would have opted for the occasional skin outbreak as a trade-off for that oil, too!

According to dermatologists, the more you wash your hair, the more your body wants to secrete the natural oils meant to PROTECT your skin, so if you decide to quit shampooing like I have, you may notice an INCREASE in oil atop your scalp for a few weeks (because your body has been trained to do this DAILY thanks to the shampoo routine).

The alternative to shampoo is baking soda mixed with water, shaken up to get rid of the clumps, and then you simply pour it over your head, massaging the mix into your scalp before you rinse it away with water or (shudder) vinegar.

IF you're blessed with healthy and natural oily skin, this is probably going to work marvelously well for you.

NOT if you're like me, however. The alkaline baking soda is harsh, and the acidic vinegar should strip what LITTLE oil I actually produce in an entire WEEK.

Again, it's common sense to know that what works for some may not, always be in YOUR best interest. I'm sticking to my NO SHAMPOO routine and conditioning every, other day instead. (I use the sink, not the shower ~ still preferring to bathe extensively just once a week while taking care of my face & hands on a daily basis in order to protect my dry, flaky skin from excessive damage).

So here, now, are the list of WORST and BEST shampoos out there according to Totalbeauty.com.

THE WORST SHAMPOOS

Burt's Bees Rosemary Mint Shampoo Bar, $5.99 ... 4.2
This is like a bar of soap, which you work up into a lather that you then smooth onto your wet hair. The woman commenting said it took forever to work up a good-enough lather to effectively massage anything into her hair.
Again, this comes as no surprise to me ... Burt's Bee's seems more like HYPE than a HIT in my humble opinion.

Suave Professionals Radiant Brunette Shampoo, $2.23 ... 3.9
Suave tries to convince you that they're 'just as good' as salon formulas, but until they work to improve their products to the point where this claim becomes actual fact, I refuse to give in to their pressure tactics. Suave stinks.

Rusk Being Fresh Shampoo, $11.99 ... 3.8
The woman quoted for this, particular shampoo said there was nothing special or redeeming about it, so she wouldn't try using it anymore. Personally, I've never tried anything Rusk, so I don't know what to add.

Alterna Luxury White Truffle Shampoo, $30 ... 3.5
The woman quoted said there was nothing luxurious about this shampoo, and that it did nothing for the dryness or damage to her hair. She was not impressed for that price.

Biosilk Hydrating Shampoo, $10.49 ... 3.2
The woman quoted said this product did not lather well, and that it left her hair feeling harsh, or stripped.

MOP Lemongrass Shampoo, $14 ... 1.3
I've never heard of MOP, and the lemongrass title had me fooled for a minute. How could something as natural as lemongrass not work? See, this is the danger of believing everything that you read, hear, or even see.
The woman quoted said that she had heard GOOD things about MOP, but that this product didn't improve her hair, and that it left her scalp feeling itchy after awhile.

THE BEST SHAMPOOS

MOP Basil Mint Shampoo, $12.50 ... 10
A tad ironic that MOP Lemongrass makes the worst cut while MOP Mint made the best list. And, the woman interviewed said she loved the smell. She didn't go into detail about what the shampoo did for her hair, only that she loved the smell and used it in the morning to wake up.
Personally, I don't know that I'd want my hair smelling like gum, but that's just me.

PHYTO Phytobrush Smoothing Shampoo With Acacia Honey,
$24 ... 10
Another PHYTO product makes the best list, so now I'm more intrigued than ever.
And, the woman interviewed said she also has naturally curly hair, and that this product helped with frizz as well as making it feel silky whenever she would blow-dry.

Rene Furterer Karite Intense Nourishing Shampoo, $23 ... 10
It is recommended that you double-poo with this product, leaving the second app on for a few minutes before rinsing.
I do this with a conditioner, and though the woman interviewed says her hair is fine, with dry skin, she swears by the ritual performance and loves the outcome.

Infusium (Colour)ologie Shampoo, $6.99 ... 10
This came as a surprise.
I've used Infusium products in the past, and it left a sticky, filmy feeling that gummed up at the next washing. The woman interviewed said her hair is fine and dyed, but that this product was totally manageable.

Sunsilk ThermaShine Shampoo, $4.49 ... 9
The woman interviewed said she liked that it works best for heat-treated hair, and that the shampoo/conditioner mix kept her hair shiny & manageable.
I don't know, but to me, Sunsilk seems a bit like Suave.
It's made the cut twice now, so maybe I should give it a chance and see what happens.

Joico K-Pak Shampoo, $11.96 ... 9
The woman interviewed said she would recommend this to anyone that over-processes or daily blow-drys their hair. She liked that it makes her long hair feel healthy and gives it shine.

So, there you have it, according to the ladies at totalbeauty.com

Personally, I'll stick to my no-shampoo routine and continue with conditioners that help to give my dry, parched skin some moisture.
BTW ... I found something new on the shelves by AVEENO, and I thought I'd give it a try, since their lotions have always helped to fix my flaky skin.
I'll be sure to report the results after a few, more weeks of use.
